| THOMPSON IS TOP CHOICE OF TRUCK COMPONENT MAKERS Thompson is reaping the rewards of a boom in demand for British-made products, in particular, from overseas manufacturers of commercial vehicle components. The Halesowen-based manufacturer of friction welding machines has just won a trio of orders from customers in Europe and Asia who will use the market-leading equipment to produce a wide range of truck axles. According to Thompson, its Model 125 double-ended friction welder is proving extremely popular with beam, trailer and drive axle makers because it not only delivers reliable performance but also offers a host of unrivalled, highly-engineered features. The machine is specially designed to friction weld truck axle parts thanks to an electronic-based positioning system which has been developed by Thompson to accurately align components during the welding process. The Model 125 is capable of producing finished machined components thanks also to other Thompson innovations such as its closed loop control of welding pressures and unique, machine base construction. “Thompson is experiencing a substantial growth in demand for its machines, which includes significant levels of business from overseas commercial vehicle and passenger car component makers,” explained sales manager Nick Edge. The company’s latest success appeared to be further evidence of the boom in demand for British-made machinery as stated in the Confederation of British Industry’s latest Industrial Survey which reported a big increase in export business for capital goods, he added. These new contracts follow a recent crop of multi-million pound export orders for Thompson from manufacturers in Korea, South America, Scandinavia and the United States. |
