| THOMPSON IS TOP CHOICE FOR DANISH ENGINEER A busy Danish engineering company has purchased its second Thompson friction welding machine following a substantial increase in new business. Aviatec, based in Norresundby, has taken delivery of a refurbished Model 50 for friction welding a wide range of components such as reinforcing bars, piston rods, hydraulic cylinders, drill pipes and pump shafts. ![]() The Thompson machine has been equipped with special 2 and 3 jaw chucks and tie-bars so that parts up to 3m in length can be friction welded. It also features Thompson’s computerised system for in-process weld monitoring and control. Aviatec, which provides a sub-contract friction welding service for customers throughout Scandinavia, is still using its first Thompson friction welder that was purchased more than 30 years ago. “The first friction welding machine continues to run very well and I believe there is no other manufacturer that compares to Thompson. The machines are easy to operate and specially designed for quick changeovers from one job to another,” commented owner Jeppe Troelsen. “As well as making excellent machines, Thompson has always gone out of its way to offer expert advice whenever I’ve needed help with finding the right welding parameters or other technical queries,” he added. Thompson was also able to complete the machine within a very tight timeframe, ensuring Aviatec could boost its capacity in order to meet an upturn in its business, explained Lawrence Darby, Thompson’s European sales manager. “It is an excellent partnership which now spans more than three decades. I’m delighted that the business continues to flourish as Aviatec offers a highly-skilled service and has vast experience of welding many different types of components and geometries,” he stated. Thompson is also enjoying a healthy order book after winning more than £6 million worth of new business from customers in Europe, America and the Far East. In particular, it has won a significant number of orders from manufacturers of drill rods and heavy duty oil pipes.
